Overview of the most common funding opportunities

Erasmus+ and PROMOS Grants

Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is the European Union's program for education, youth and sport. With a budget of around 26.2 billion euros, around ten million individuals are set to benefit from Erasmus+ by 2027. In the higher education sector, these are students in all study cycles up to and including doctoral studies who wish to complete part of their studies or an internship abroad, as well as university staff.

Reason for funding: Study visit to a partner university within the EU or UK (internships are also eligible, see here)

Funding amount: Between €490 and €600 per month, depending on the destination country. Additional top-ups possible for Green Travel and students with limited opportunities.

Funding duration: 3 months minimum stay. Funding is theoretically possible for up to 12 months per study phase (BA/MA) (separate applications!). Actual funding depends on the budget available at RPTU.

Advantages:

  • Mostly already established partnership with mutual prior experience regarding processes and contact persons
  • There are no tuition fees at the partner university.
  • Recognition of credits earned abroad.
  • Students receive organizational and academic support both at RPTU and at the host university

PROMOS

The DAAD "Program to Increase the Mobility of Students at German Universities" (PROMOS) provides financial support to students at German universities during their stay abroad outside of Europe. Over the last ten years, more than 110,000 students have been supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) during their stays abroad. Over 300 universities from all over Germany currently take part in PROMOS every year.

Reason for funding: Study visit to a partner university/self-selected university in a non-European country for students with very good academic performance. The focus is on strengthening existing partnerships. Freemover, internship and thesis stays are treated in the order of priority mentioned.

Funding amount: The funding consists of a monthly partial scholarship installment and a one-off lump sum for travel expenses ( download funding rates). Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses can also apply for a grant to cover additional expenses.

Funding duration: one-time max. 6 months (3 months minimum stay)

Self-organized stay abroad (freemover without funding)

You can carry out self-organized stays abroad at any time without financial support from RPTU. This means that you are not subject to any standardized processes; the International Office is not responsible.

If you would like your achievements abroad to be recognized for your studies here, you should first find an academic supervisor from your department with whom you can agree a Learning Agreement.
