Preparation for your stay

What to study?

Our Department of Psychology offers 3 degree programs in Psychology and 2 interdisciplinary degree programs in cooperation with other departments:

In order to make it easier for students with little knowledge of German to participate in our German programs, we offer some courses in English every semester. Our course catalog specifically lists the English courses in Psychology and Communication Psychology for each semester.

Your active contributions in class (participation in discussions, presentations, etc.) can be made in English in any course. The modalities for the examination will be agreed with the respective professor.

The specific planning of your course schedule must be clarified individually. Our faculty coordinator will be happy to discuss this with you.

Preparation for your stay abroad at RPTU

  • passport photo
  • Letter of motivation
  • Proof of language skills
  • certificate
  • Curriculum vitae

You will be guided through the digital application process via the Mobility Online system and asked for the documents during the process.

  • The semester fee is not a fee, but a social contribution that every student enrolled at a university in Germany must pay. At RPTU in Landau, the semester fee is currently €162.50 (+ €10 deposit) and includes student services (subsidized meals for students, access to free sports facilities) and support for the work of the General Student Committee (AstA).
  • It is due each semester you are enrolled at the university.

  • In Germany, health insurance is considered the most important insurance and is required by law for all employees in Germany as well as for all students as a prerequisite for enrollment.
  • Private travel or emergency insurance is not recognized as student health insurance. Although they are often required when applying for a visa, they do not fulfill the requirements for enrollment.
  • At RPTU in Landau, we recommend taking out a contract with TK (Techniker Krankenkasse), which is represented on campus once a week.
  • Further general information on health insurance can be found on this website.
  • It is also strongly recommended that you take out liability insurance to cover you in the event of damage caused by you.

The student residences are managed by the Studierendenwerk Vorderpfalz (not by the university itself). The cost of living in a student hall of residence is approx. 2482 € per semester and includes basic facilities, heating, water, electricity, bath/shower and kitchenette. A deposit of €650 and two months' rent must be paid in advance.

The rooms can only be rented for the duration of an entire semester (6 months):

Winter semester: October 01 to March 31 -- Summer semester: April 01 to September 30

Contracts for other rental periods are currently not possible!

The International Office has reserved a certain number of apartments per semester, which are allocated after receipt of the application. A place in a student hall of residence cannot be guaranteed, although the chances of being accepted are currently very good.

You can also find an overview of the accommodation options on this website.
Please note that Manuela Roth is only available as a contact person for Master's students.

Estimated monthly costs:

  • Accommodation approx. 400-500 € (+ one-off deposit of 650 €)
  • Health insurance approx.: 120 €
  • Personal expenses for food, books, leisure activities approx. 250-300 €
  • Internet, broadcasting fees and telephone approx. 30 €

These living costs amount to a total of approx. 4,600 € per semester.

You will need to transfer various amounts of money before your arrival and during your stay. If you transfer these from your home country, you can expect to pay high fees.

It is therefore advisable to open a German bank account in order to be able to pay the monthly costs for rent, health insurance and other expenses.

Option 1: Account with a (local) German bank

Can only be opened in Germany, as you will need your German social security number, which you will receive automatically approx. 4-6 weeks after registering with the city.
Your buddy will help you to open an account.

Option 2: Account with an international bank

International banking institutions that offer bank accounts with a German/European IBAN. Quick to set up from many locations and with low fees. Sometimes a valid visa is required.
We recommend that you set up these accounts before you leave your home country! Once you are in Germany, some of the providers are subject to German bureaucracy and it can take longer to activate such bank accounts.

To our knowledge, international students have had good experiences with the following institutions:

Revolut

WISE

N26 Bank

Expatrio

Tomorrow

You will be assigned a buddy (= student mentor), who will help you with your first steps/administrative procedures during your first days in Landau.

The International Office will provide you with the contact details of your buddy, who you should contact as soon as possible.

At Campus Landau we offer German courses at various levels, which are tailored as far as possible to the needs of the participants.

Before you arrive, you will be asked about your interests and previous knowledge of German. For higher levels, you will need to complete an online placement test and provide us with the results, which we will use as a basis for planning the courses in the respective semester.

An overview of all language courses offered at the Landau campus can be found here.

The Welcome Weeks (beginning of April/October) are organized by the International Office. They are mandatory, as during this time you will not only get to know the university, your relevant contact persons and each other, but will also be prepared for your study stay at RPTU. Among other things, the following steps will be taken there:

  • Enrollment
  • RPTU account
  • Student ID card
  • course registration
  • etc.

Documents required:

  • Letter of Acceptance
  • Proof of payment of the semester fee
  • Proof of health insurance
  • a biometric passport photo (jpeg, max. 2 MB, digital format) to apply for the student ID card

You must be registered at the town hall (EU citizens) or at the foreigners authority (non-EU citizens).

Required documents:

  • Registration certificate
  • Tenancy agreement or certificate from the landlord

Once you have enrolled, we will explain how to register your RPTU account. You can then apply for your RPTU student ID card by uploading a biometric photo.

The student ID card will be sent to the International Office within one to two weeks of your application. We will issue it to you.

We recommend that you always carry it with you. The ID card is a multi-purpose card that serves the following purposes

  • Proof of identity as a student
  • Payment in the canteen, cafeteria and student residences
  • Access to the university network (internet access)

It is valid for one semester and must be revalidated each semester.
