Overview & course of study

The long-term preservation of the environment as the basis of life for all people is a global challenge. Individual scientific disciplines are reaching their limits when it comes to researching and solving environmental problems such as climate change, increasing environmental pollution or the effects of new technologies on humans and the environment. Complex phenomena and processes and the associated opportunities and risks should therefore be examined from different disciplinary perspectives and critically scrutinized.

As a first degree program in the natural, environmental and social sciences, the "Man and Environment" degree program is aimed at those interested in a broad-based course of study with a focus on the environment. A broad range of knowledge in basic natural, environmental and social science subjects forms the framework of the degree program. In addition, there is the opportunity to specialize in one of the three profile lines: environmental psychology, environmental communication or environmental economics. The degree program also focuses on inter- and transdisciplinarity and ensures high-quality methodological training. Students learn to gain an overview of the central connections between the individual disciplines and their relevance for solving current issues and to apply fundamental scientific methods and findings.

Interdisciplinarity

is one of the basic principles of this degree program. It is about recognizing the boundaries of individual disciplines and thinking outside the box. Interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity are becoming increasingly important. In order to be able to deal with social challenges, it is necessary to consider the disciplines not in isolation, but in conjunction with each other and to connect with practitioners.
